Bellaire Police Chief Onesimo Lopez, Jr. announced his retirement on Saturday, December 20, 2025. On Sunday, both Lopez and Bellaire PD posted to social media to announce the retirement.
Chief Lopez had served the department for seven years, including five as Chief, joining after 24 years at Pearland PD.
He was placed on paid leave in November 2025, and the investigation concluded just before his retirement announcement. The investigation reportedly involved Lopez contacting an outside agency to look into his command staff, a move some sources found concerning.
Lt. Shane O’Sullivan has been named Acting Chief of Police.
Construction on the new Bellaire High school is complete. The original building was demolished during the week of July 13-17, 2021.
