Bellaire City Council on May 6 – Oh My! Finance 101, Solar Panels, $$$ For Holly Street Trail And More!

UPDATE 5/8/2024: By a vote of 5 to 2 City Council approved another $115,000 for the Holly Street Trail.  They also approved the $214,000 solar panel proposal for City Hall on a 6 to 1 vote.  The tree ordinance passed by a vote of 5 to 1 with one member absent.  The proposal to address some changes in the Comprehensive Plan regarding multi-family was postponed.  The meeting lasted 6 hours and ended at midnight.  Here’s the video.

The Bellaire City Council has quite a variety of agenda items to address at the May 6 2024, City Council meeting.  Find the full agenda here: Agenda for May 6, 2024.

After opening ceremonies at 6 PM there will be a Workshop, Public Finance 101: Presentation on Public Finance 101 as it relates to Council’s FY 2025-2027 Adopted Strategic Plan. Note that only General Obligation Bond issues require voter approval.

Later, under New Business, you’ll find:

Authorization for another $115,595 for the Holly Street Trail project (for those keeping count, this would push expenses for that esplanade in the past 10 years to over $430,000).

Consideration to authorize $214,107 for a solar energy system for City Hall.  Find the City Hall costs for electricity for the period of February, 2021 through January, 2024 here.  The current average is about $3,000 per month.  Find a link here to the website of the chosen contractor, Sunshine Renewable Solutions LLC.

Consideration to amend Chapter 9 of our municipal ordinances to enhance tree protection – (that would get my vote, let’s preserve our tree canopy and help to reduce flooding)

Consideration to amend the Comprehensive Plan regarding multi-family development – remove multi-family by right in CMU or UV-D.
